Brakes

Posted under Brakes - Oct 21st, 09

One of the most important parts of your car are the brakes. If these go out or are not maintained well, it can cause major trouble and is a huge safety risk. It is so important that you maintain them and make them last the longest that they possibly can.

Brake fluid plays an essential role in the health of your brakes and how long your brakes will last you. Make sure that you are checking it constantly. You want to make sure that your break fluid is right for you car, as well as at the appropriate levels.

When you are inspecting your breke fluid, if you notice that it has changed colors or is now fairly milky, it is time to change. Brake fluid, if it has gone bad, can ruin your master cylinder, a major part of your brake system.

You can choose to change your brake fluid yourself if you feel up to it, or take it to a trusted professional to do the job. The process can be tedious if you’ve never done it before.

First step in changing your brake fluid is what is called brake bleeding. This is a very important step that should never be skipped. You need to ‘bleed’ the brake lines to make sure that all the air bubbles get out.

Brake bleeding is an important step because if air builds up in the lines, your brakes are not going to work as well. If you have a ‘mushy’ or ‘soft’ pedal, it is most likely attributed to air building up in the lines.

It is usually recommended for two people to be helping as your bleed your brakes. I have heard and read of ways that you can do it with only one person and some special bleeding tools, but it is a lot easier if another person there to help.

Another good way of keeping your brakes maintained is to be checking the rotors and pads. Compared to the last procedure this one is a lot easier because all you need to do is take off the tires. If you can see that your pads are wearing down so badly that you can barely see them, it is time to get your brakes changed.

Sometimes, in an attempt to save money, inexperienced people will try to do all these things on their own. It is important to know a few things about cars but if you aren’t that familiar with them, take your car to a trusted professional and talk to them. They will help you know what to look for when you are doing maintenance work by yourself.
